N. Kazantzakis meets El Greco

This photograph exhibition is based on the shootings of Yannis Smaragdis’ great film “EL GRECO”. El Greco, the famous renaissance painter, was born in Heraklion, became a great artist and then went to Venice and Spain where he painted his most important works. In this film the well known Greek director, Yannis Smaragdis, shows El Greco’s life and work and penetrates into his soul.

Manolis Metzakis and Efi Psilaki captured unique images with their photo cameras and proceeded to an original dialogue between photography and the seventh art. The pictures were taken during the shooting of the film, as well as during the breaks, and they had the chance to immortalize not only the faces but also the way of living of another epoch.

After the taking of the photographs Efi Psilaki proceeded to another dialogue, between the Cretan writer Nikos Kazantzakis and his compatriot painter El Greco. Kazantzakis discovered El Greco three centuries later, placed him at the center of his interest, called him “grandfather” in his last book and approached his work with a new vision. The extracts which accompany the pictures make a beautiful journey into three different time spaces: El Greco’s time (16th-17th century), Kazantzakis’ time (19th-20th century), and the time of the film shooting (2006-2007). At the same time it is a journey into the world of art…
